LANDSCAPE GARDENING

Gardening First Steps Gardening First Steps

The first step in selecting plants is based on specific needs identified in the landscaping plan. A plan is important to maximize the landscape and meet the needs of climate control, noise reduction, privacy screening. The landscaping plan should influence the total property, but may only include the front of the home one year and another part of the garden later on. Before planting in your garden, survey the site for potential hazards to plant growth. For instance, new construction sites are often littered with debris such as mortar or limestone, this creates an alkaline soil condition and inhibits a plant's ability to absorb nutrients out of your garden.

Take into account chemical spillages, such as engine oil or petrol, this can and probably will shorten the life expectancy of your plants. It may be necessary to remove the top six to eight inches of soil and replace it with a good grade topsoil. Make sure that you do not have compacted soil in your garden, this again has an adverse effect on growth rates.

Take these notes and listen to my advice when doing your gardening. There are no specific rules in garden planning but you'll get more satisfaction from your effort if you take note of the below: Don't cut up the lawn with flower beds.

Flowers serve gardens better in a separate flower garden or in attractive beds near the lawn. Plant tall growing flowers to the back, middle size flowers in the centre, low growing flowers in the front. Then you and your friends can enjoy them all. Mass your colours in clumps for maximum colour contrast.

When choosing any plants/shrubs or trees consider the branching habit, foliage colour, flowers, and fruit during various times of the year. The more you understand about plants and gardening the greater will be the satisfaction gained from landscape gardening.

Planting In The Garden Planting In The Garden

Most plants are commonly sold in containers, usually plastic, remove the plant's root ball from the container.

Break up the root ball by teasing the roots apart with your fingers or making several vertical cuts through the roots on the edges of the ball preferably with a sharp implement.

The hole should be as deep as the plant's root ball is tall, but about twice as wide as the root ball. Discard any large rocks that you remove, but save the soil.

You can mix the native soil with some compost or manure to increase the amount of organic matter in the soil. The top of the root ball should be level with the surface.

I think such roses are the answer to a gardener's prayer. The only problem is that, for the English climate, is that there are a couple of issues with these plants roses.

One problem is that in some varieties, the flower heads are too large for the stems to bear, and so after heavy rain they tend to flop.

Also, after rain, many of these varieties are rather prone to black spot and other fungal diseases.

This may be something to do with the intensive cultivating processes. But, if you live in a climate that is not so damp, I think you will adore these plants!.

Gardening And Climbers Gardening And Climbers

Clematis armandii. This plant not only has lots of beautifully fragrant small flowers, but also it's evergreen. Similar to passion fruit meaning that it stays green throughout the year!

It does like a sheltered spot in the garden, so you'll have to bear that in mind when doing your planning. Remember the plants needs support by means of a trellis, because it does not self climb like ivy does! Ivy has sucker type grabbers but this wraps string like shoots around the trellis.

Two cultivars are apple blossom and snowdrift. The only slight problem is it does take a little while to get going, but once it is established it grows very quickly Another Climber which favours in our list is Ivy Hedera 'Goldheart'.

This has pink stems, that turn brown with age. The leaves are dark green with a spontaneous splash of yellow in the middle.

All these plants are an ideal starting point for any lanscape gardening project and I hope you have enjoyed reading the article! Back To Gardening Home Page
